Democratic Kanaf - A Home to Grow in Your Own Way
At the Kanaf Democratic School, we are committed to creating a respectful educational environment, where every person, child or adult, receives recognition, listening, and equal treatment. We believe in the right of every student to explore their personal and academic world at a pace and in a way that suits them, while cultivating a vibrant, participatory, and dialogical community.
Through a democratic lifestyle, we encourage initiative, curiosity, responsibility, and life skills, and accompany processes of independent learning and natural internal organization.
We see personal and environmental responsibility as central values for the development of man and society, and act to strengthen them in every encounter, action, and decision.
Education for respect for human dignity is expressed in school through personal conversations, engaging with personal boundaries, writing a “Respect Journal”, encouraging the assumption of leadership roles (while avoiding spoon-feeding), and through diverse activities enabling the acceptance of different views and making space for others.
Education for independence is promoted by adults “taking a step back”, building a path together with children, setting goals, and teaching children to seek support and help when needed. This is reflected practically through responsibilities children assume, participation in committees, various partnerships, lessons, and workshops.
Education for discourse and dialogue is expressed in adults accepting the views of all children and serving as role models for open dialogue. The school creates a space enabling the expression of opinions, sharing, and discourse, where everyone's ideas receive expression (for example, through student activity proposals) and encourages asking questions.
